What is Hardscaping? Hardscaping is the stone component of an outdoor living space. Hardscaping can be dry laid on a traditional flexible base, or it can also be wet laid utilizing traditional masonry techniques. Typically, Hardscaping is a patio, walkway, wall or columns. Hardscaping can be wood as well, such as a pergola, deck, or trellis. Any good designer will soften up an outdoor hardscape space using plants, commonly referred to as “softscaping”.
A thought about Hardscaping
Too many linear elements can create the same unnatural feel. “I see way too many people plop in a straight or L-shaped sidewalk, or stick a linear or rectangular patio or deck on the back of the house without giving further thought to the natural lines of the space,” says Dave Connors. “You should try to include curves and shapes in a way that the hardscape elements transition gracefully into the rest of the landscape.” A slight curve on a front walkway or patio can create an aesthetically pleasing look and also provides more character for your planting area’s.
Flexible base hardscapes
A flexible base is essentially a stone base process that is more economical than a footer base masonry system and can stand up to our freeze/thaw cycles.
A wet laid hardscape system is classic and works well with natural stones. You cannot wet lay concrete pavers. CKC Landscaping has mason’s on staff and are trained in the art of laying stone.
Which one is for you?
Traditionally the dry laid systems are less expensive. With product innovations by EP Henry, CST, and Techo Bloc the pavers are becoming a more popular choice. It truly is amazing how the hardscape manufactures have progressed in their overall designs and processes. With the introduction of polymeric sand within the last ten years, this really has made the flexible base systems the best. If you are looking for a natural stone hardscape look, you should check out these pavers:
