Traditional Base (2A Modified)
The industry-standard method for decades. We use a deep layer of dense, graded aggregate (crushed stone mixed with stone dust) compacted until rock-hard.
- Best For: Standard walkways and budget-conscious patio projects.
- How it Works: Relies on surface runoff; water sheds off the top of the pavers.
- CKC Standard: We geo-woven stabilization fabric to separate sub-soil, preventing sinking over time.
Open Graded Base (Permeable)
The superior choice for freeze/thaw climates like Pennsylvania. We use 3/4″ “clean” stone without fine dust, allowing water to flow through the base rather than trapping it.
- Best For: Heavy clay soils, areas with drainage issues, and premium pavers.
- Why Upgrade? Eliminates heaving from frozen ground water and prevents bedding sand from washing out.
- Bonus: Many Townships will exclude this type of based patio or driveway from your permeable surface allowance.
Wet Laid (Masonry)
The ultimate in durability and elegance. Instead of floating on stone, your paving material (usually Flagstone or Travertine) is mortared permanently onto a poured concrete foundation.
Best For: Natural stone, formal terraces, and pool decks requiring a solid, seamless feel.
The Result: A rigid, permanent structure that feels as solid as your home’s flooring.
Maintenance: Requires high-quality jointing compounds to prevent cracking over decades.
